Before beginning a fitness endeavor – consider this…

One of my favorite words in all of the human language is the word poiema. Poiema means masterpiece, poem, or work of art. In a more precise context, it means God’s masterpiece. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” That is the truth about who you are. You are not defined by a number on a scale, body-fat %, how much you can lift, or how big your biceps are. In fact, to submit yourself to such an insignificant scale is quite insulting.

I say all of this because having been in the fitness industry for over 15 years, I have seen the downfall of having such a heavy value placed on the cosmetic. The world’s standard of beauty is ever-changing. From month to month, week to week, and even day to day the world will change its standard; However, God says that you were created beautiful in His sight and that will never change. Now that we have established a solid foundation, let’s talk about the other side to this.

Maybe you are reading this and you are not where you would like to be. Let’s put it another way, maybe you have made decisions (whether it be via ignorance or not) that have left you with much to be desired from a health & appearance viewpoint. The great news is this: you are in control and have the power to make a change! Here’s where most people get it wrong, they change from a place of hate. I know the feeling. Trust me, I have been there. I hate how I look therefore I will make a change. I am not going to lie, hate can be a very powerful motivator; however, I want to offer you an alternative.

Most people say this: “I hate this about myself and I am going to change it”. What if instead of changing from a place of hate, you changed from a place of love. See how this sounds: “Because I love myself and want the best for myself, I am going to change”. It is a very small shift, but the results are profound. We get so much animosity from the world, we don’t need it from within as well.

Now more than ever I believe it is imperative that we take care of ourselves. This is the only body you get in this life. Make sure you show it the love and attention it deserves.
